At first there was pain, confusion, as the morphosis crept through your veins like a blazing wildfire. Your bones ached as they repeatedly and instantly fractured and healed over the course of several agonizing seconds. Your hide was pulled taught and stretched near to tearing as your body shifted itself to accomodate this new unruly form, and for a moment you worried that it might not be able to keep up. That the whole of yourself would split open and all of your insides might come draining out like water from a burst dam, but after several excrutiating moments your muscles would relax, and you, breathless and panting, would feel a sense of cool relief wash over you, extinguishing the aching discomfort that twinged throughout what felt like each and every single one of your nerves.
Your companion, now small and exhausted, would fall back, away from you, catching himself on the ground and curiously looking up at you with eyes that were filled not with fear, but with a profound sadness. It was done... And with what strength he had left, he would send you off towards the massive terror that loomed in the distance.
As he'd warned, there was an army of shadowbeasts that grew steadily denser the closer you came towards the epicenter of the outbreak. They scurried around quickly like an infestation of roaches climbing over one another in droves, or a swarm of ravenous ants all bristling and gnashing their teeth as they crawled out from between the cracks in the earth, but despite how rabidly they skittered and clambored about, it would seem that your companion had not lied to you, and as you passed carefully through their ranks not a single one of the shadowy creatures ever turned your way or seemed to even pay you any sort of mind, facilitating your passage and allowing you to approach the monstrous, erupting form of what you now knew to be Lapsus.
The cracks in the earth grew larger and larger the closer you drew to the awakening god and you would have to step carefully to avoid falling into the chaotic abyss that churned below your feet. Luckily your new form was not just a disguise, and with each powerful step you took, you found that you could cross these ruptures with ease, twisting and contorting yourself midair in order to avoid the many pieces of shattered earth that floated hazardously around you, until finally you were near enough to the angry god, to reach out a hand and touch it. Just as you were to do so, however; you would hear a voice in your head. The sound was familiar to you, the weary voice of your companion.
"Be ready!" He'd tell you.
"Once you do this, they will not let you leave until one of you is defeated."
"My hold on this realm is dwindling, so you must act quickly! Find their pieces, and vanquish them, in whatever way you can. We must seal Lapsus away again, before he fully awakens."
The sound of his voice, like the chime of a bell, fades away and you are left alone again. Lapsus looms before you, and an army of shadowbeasts ravages the landscape behind you. This world is falling apart. You reach out your hand and rest your palm against the boiling skin of the beast, and suddenly the landscape around you washes away. Its sounds, its temperature, even the very ground beneath your feet is different, and as you turn about, you find that you are not where you stood only moments ago.
You stand alone on a desolate battlefield filled with the bodies of fallen foes. Swords of the defeated litter the terrain, and a small distance away from you the disfigured form of a lone knight turns to see you facing him, an aura of death wafting over from his rotting corpse. The knight rises to its feet, meters above you like a tower swaying over the fog. You notice as he stands that he has not just one but two sets of arms. A large beastly pair that sprout from his back, and a smaller more human-like pair that grow from their usual place. In his heavy arms he carries a greatword, still soaked in blood that drips off from it and onto the ground in large beads. In his smaller arms he carries an equally impressive sword that is shrouded in the deepest shadow.
He raises both blades and points them directly towards you. A black liquid weeps from the slits in his helm. A penitent and angry voice can be heard billowing out in echoes across the battlefield.
"I must protect them."
What will you do?
Objectives:
Conflict Path:
- The knight has drawn his sword, and the blade will not be sheathed again until it has tasted the blood of victory. His restless corpse now stands between you and your goal.
Fight Lapsus in a duel to the death.
-
- You can depict this however you please. Whether you are fighting or defeating him, and whether you are in standard or wereform is up to you.
- You can depict this however you please. Whether you are fighting or defeating him, and whether you are in standard or wereform is up to you.
Pacifist Path:
- You relax your claws and unbare your teeth as you approach your foe steadily in order to reach for something that has caught your eye. A cracked spot in the old knight's armour. Without a weapon poised he seems to not regard you as a combatant, instead eyeing you quietly as you reach out to touch at what seems like a deep wound beneath the crack in his plate armor. Doing so transports you through his painful dreams. The waking nightmare that he has been forced to relive every day since his banishment.. Images of the past that haunt and suffocate the God, and as you stand there quietly observing his shameful deeds, he turns to face you once more. His eyes now locked with yours draw you in, and suddenly you find yourself in his exact position.

- Think of a time when you had to take a risk. What was it? How did you overcome this hurdle and what did you need to sacrifice in order to do so? Was it your own personal comfort, or the comfort of others? Maybe it was a literal sacrifice of time, body, or energy? Were you afraid, and if so how did you overcome that fear in order to do what needed to be done? How did taking this risk change you?
You feel a rush of water lapping at your ankles and look down to realize that you are standing on what seems to be the surface of a dark ocean. On the distant horizon the sky and sea meet each other in the middle, reflecting themselves in almost complete perfection. The sea itself spans a great distance around you, uninterrupted for miles in every direction. There is not a single speck of land in sight and not a single wave or crest interrupts the mirror image of the sky on the water's surface. As you take a careful step forward, rings form around your feet and rush outward, disappearing into the far distance. It is at this point you no longer feel safe. Like you are being watched, no, hunted by something you cannot see.
Below you, the shadow of something huge and bestial begins to emerge, it's boney figure barely taking a clear shape beneath the water's surface. This ocean, you realize, is like a web, and you have just disturbed the spider who rests at its center.
Suddenly, the creature's hand breaches the still water. Grabbing you and dragging you deep below. Bringing you deeper and deeper into her domain. You hold your breath for as long as possible, until you feel your lungs about to burst, before gasping out and realizing that you can exist here without issue. As your eyes acclimate to the vastness of this place, the pitiful calls of whales and a woman sobbing reverberate through the water to reach your ears, and as you rapidly approach the sea floor far below, you are able to see skeletons of every sea creature imaginable littering the depths like an underwater graveyard.
You aren't entirely sure if you were able to free yourself from her grasp, or wether she chose to relinquish her grip, but as you quickly right yourself upon the sandy surface, you look upwards and take in the imposing form of bone and water that sits atop a throne of skulls, it's sadness etched within it's horse-shaped skull. This tall dreadful thing stares at you defensively, watching, waiting for your next move and you realize that here you stand.. alone among the dead.
what will you do?
Objectives:
Conflict Path:
- The large Skeletal figure of the dead god, Mare, stands before you. Her empty eyes follow your every move with an unsettling scrutiny. You recall what you were told about how Lapsus consumed her. It would seem that now only her remains persist, trapped here in this inescapable prison alongside her perpetrator. You ready yourself as she lurches towards you, the bones of the dead that she sits upon shifting and cracking beneath her weight.
Defeat Mare in battle.

- You can depict this however you please. Whether you are fighting or defeating her, and whether you are in standard or wereform is up to you.

Pacifist Path:
- You clear your mind of fear, and turn your attention towards a spot, a wound, that Mare presents to you willingly. There is a deep hole in her chest that is spilling out an endless amount of blue liquid. She cranes over you, her hollowed eyes following your every move, and for a moment you are confused, before you realize that she is allowing you access to the injury. You aren't entirely sure how, but wordlessly you seem to understand her intentions, and you bring your hands up to press into the deep blue ocean that pours out from the hole in her chest. It is then that your mind floods with the sullen memory of two gods. They appear to you in various flashes and segments of scenes. At first they seem happy together. The pair sit side by side and laugh as she tenderly tends to the wounds of the larger, armored figure. In the quiet of the night, she visits him while he stands guard over the troupe, offering gifts and exchanging gentle words. You feel her worry as she offers him comfort. Her deep desire to provide him with succor as he gradually grows more agitated and restless. Before long, the scene shifts again. Now the two stand arguing back and forth... And ultimately you watch as her life is abruptly brought to an end at the hands of one she trusted. You try to help, to cry out and stop this from happening, but it's too late. These events have already come to pass.
And as you turn away from the gruesome betrayal, you realize that the scene has changed yet again, and the memories that surround you now are your own.

- Think of a time when you lost something precious to you. What or who was it, and how did it affect you? Did you manage to overcome your grief or do you still harbor an unresolved pain from losing something important? How has this loss changed you since?

The sounds of the world around you cut out and all of a sudden you are left alone in pure, uninterrupted silence. Everything is pitch black, and as you turn to get a better idea of where you've just ended up, you think for a moment that maybe you've forgotten to open your eyes, but as your vision adjusts to the change in lighting, you realize that is not the case at all. There is a darkness here that permeates your very core. Everything around you is completely obscured and smothered by a deep, endless gloom, save for the dull glow of the pale white ground beneath your feet that is littered here and there with what seem to be small clusters of tangled roots.
In an effort to make your way out of this ceaseless darkness, you pick a direction and begin to walk, hoping that something, anything, will appear to guide your way, but nothing ever does. Instead, the further you go, the more you begin to notice the roots growing all around you. They litter the floor and dangle from above like hanging moss on the branch of an old, dead tree, growing ever thicker the deeper you wade into them, until eventually they begin to carpet out what little light remains in this place, smothering it almost completely.
And just when you are certain that you've become wholly and utterly lost in this empty maze of endless shadow, you notice something, pale white and glowing, pulsating steadily in the distance. Like a moth to the flame, you push yourself onwards to reach it, hoping that this light, this small spark, might lead to the way out. You fight through root and bramble, and as you draw nearer to the source, the deafening silence that had surrounded you before is gradually replaced by the warm, delicate hum of flowing energy, that grows steadily louder as you approach the glowing structure. Eventually you are near enough to see that this structure is actually a large pillar. Organic in nature and thrumming slightly as it illuminates the surrounding area in a dim but steady glow of pale white light, it looks almost like... a nerve, in a twisted kind of way. You bring yourself to stand before it and stare a moment at this strange monument that stretches upwards before you, until the sound of something rustling through the roots above you steals away your attention.
Whatever it is, it sounds like it's approaching rapidly. You look around for the source of the noise as the skittering of feet draws nearer and begins to circle you from above, the hurried rustle of branches drawing your ears this way and that, but the gloom is too thick and your eyes cannot make out any definitive shapes within the looming shadow. You carefully move yourself back towards the pillar, hoping that its light might help you to spot whatever creature has come clawing out of its den to find you, but as you turn towards the structure again, you are immediately met face-to-face with a long, shadowy figure. Its serpentine body coils tightly around the luminous pillar, with hundreds of what appear to be hands spreading out from its form and steadily blotting out more and more of the structures already dim light. It stares at you, unmoving, with an empty face. A single white circle the only mark on its otherwise blank, expressionless countenance, and before you've a chance to even speak, it begins to move, long tangling roots descending from its body like drops of oil that pool onto the ground between you and begin to writhe. You take a step back as one, then two, and eventually a small pack of Shadowbeasts pull themselves out of the ground, their bodies taking solid form from the dark pool at your feet. They bristle and bare their fangs as they encircle you, but the creature in the back remains still, watching in silence.
This is Echo. What remains of them at least..
Once responsible for invention and innovation, they were charged with creating all sorts of bright new ideas. Now they rot here in stagnation. An unwilling puppet to Lapsus the userper, forced to create countless monstrosities. Though they have no readible expression, somehow you can still tell the torment they've suffered all of these years. Regardless, they cannot resist, and so they stand, coiled before you, poised to strike.
What do you do?
Objectives:
Conflict Path:
- You are lost in the endless forest. Echo has revealed themselves to you and is ready to strike. It would seem there is only one way out.
Defeat Echo in battle. Destroy their Shadowbeasts and thin the numbers of their ranks, OR attack at the central nerve of the forest directly to hurt the god themself.
-
- You can depict this however you please. Whether you are fighting or defeating them, and whether you are in standard or wereform is up to you.
- You can depict this however you please. Whether you are fighting or defeating them, and whether you are in standard or wereform is up to you.
Pacifist Path:
- You brace yourself as the pack circles you. Waiting for one of them to leap out and attack, but instead it would seem that something is holding them back. Echo's gaze is locked on you as well, however if they can speak, they never do. Instead they simply wait, watching as you decide to make the first move. A single step towards them, and then another. The Shadowbeasts writhe like poked tigers, bristling and spitting with unbridled fury, and yet they never break ranks. Echo draws back, their body still wrapped tightly around the humming pillar, and that is when you realize that their stance is not one of aggressive intent, but a protective one. They are coiled out of fear. Defending the last precious piece of light they have left.
Slowly, you raise your hands to signal that you mean them no harm, and though they hesitate for a moment, eventually they lower their head to you and their Shadowbeasts slink away, back into the darkness. They allow you to draw nearer, to inspect the fading light of the forests central cortex. The low humming of the structure is weak, but still audible as the dead god warily watches your approach. You get the sense that no one has ever been here before. You must be the very first. This tangled forest was likely alive once and brimming with bright new ideas. A hopeful trove created with delicate hands for the betterment of the future.. but as you look now at its last dying light, you cant help but to lament the loss of this place you have never known.
Echo's coils steadily begin to unbind themselves from the structure, allowing you just enough space to place your hand, and as you do so, your mind is flooded with images of a beautiful luminescent grove. The trees here, you realize, are more than just simple, ordinary plants, they are extensions of Echo's own body. Each one grown over centuries and tended with great care. A boundless forest of thoughts and dreams. All of them stolen away by Lapsus. Now all that surrounds you both are the desecrated and rotting remains of a once cherished god. The pain they must feel is unimaginable. You carefully remove your palm from Echo's central nerve, and as you do so, they reach out to gently grasp at your hand. This time the memories that come to you are not theirs, but your own.
Show your grem touching the forest's core to clear Echo's mind. OR Depict your grem experiencing a memory relating to the prompt below:
- Think about a time when someone did something to upset you. How did you handle your feelings towards them afterwards? Did you criticize them too harshly, or did you excuse what they'd done? Since then, have you let go of this anger, or do you still cling to it? How have your feelings affected your relationship with this person and the people around you? Did the pressure of this conflict sever your bond, or did its resolution make it stronger? How has this experience changed the way you perceive and judge others?
