The evening has grown long and it seems the night may never officially end until the Demi-God, with its booming voice, calls all of you back to the fire. You hurry along, and find yourself beside Evie, who tips a smile at you. Somehow, Vell looks even better than it looked at the beginning of the night, larger and with feathers of an even more vibrant hue. Its fire is bigger than ever, a roaring column miles into the sky, a beacon unable to be missed. It spreads its wings wide and rises on its hind legs, and all who have gathered before it, now fall silent as Vell begins to speak.
“Long has it been since I have felt this alive!” the demi-god purrs contentedly before looking down upon your group. “You all have done me a great favor tonight. A kindness I will not soon forget.”
“Thank you.” it says gently, bowing its head as it continues. “Seeing me here must have been quite a shock for many of you unaccustomed to the sight.. So new are you to this world.” As the demi-god speaks you can almost catch a hint of fondness in its voice.
“My kind once walked alongside your people years ago, before the great migrations. We cared for this world as we cared for you, and we felt no need to hide away or conceal ourselves.” Vell blinks and their expression turns sullen. “But as time went on.. Things changed, and we became recluse. I am almost ashamed to say, as you lost your faith in us, we would lose ours in you…But now..”
"Your kindness and care this evening have reminded me of the days long past" They pause for a second, almost as if reminiscing on old memories.
“My power that had been waning for ages, like the withering of the crop, has been restored!” Vell fluffs out their feathers valiantly “Now renewed, here I stand. Vell, Lord of the harvest. Bringer of plentiful bounties and protector of the grain.”
“I have tended and sown the land on this world for eons, lending my aid to every would-be farmer and horticulturist, whether they knew it was my doing or not, and allowed you all to find food and nourishment in even the most barren of lands.”
"I would hope our time together here has brought you all to understand the significance of celebration with others.” It looks out over the crowd once more and stands a bit taller as it does so, with what appears to be an almost steadfast sense of determination “Both mortals and gods alike.. We have all forgotten each other, and forgotten what it is like to exist side by side." the subtle hint of regret in their voice tinging their words with a sadness that could have just as easily been missed were you not paying close attention.
"I intend to take this knowledge and spread it to the rest of my kin, to encourage them as I have been encouraged tonight… You are a small group, but you have helped your people immensely, and perhaps all of us as well." Vell pauses and this time when it looks to the sky, it feels genuine. Its eyes scan the stars, almost invisible to you, but so brilliant to Vell it seems it can only smile. You assume it’s a smile anyway, it does have a beak.
“Now, as an added thank you…”
Without any warning, a rush of golden wheat erupts through the ground enveloping all in its path. An ocean of gold spreading as far as the eye could see. “I bequeath to you, the gift of a good harvest..” The demi-god raises a sharpened claw and it glows red under the light of two moons, growing until it is the size and shape of a large scythe. Then, in one fell swoop, they reap the bounty of golden grain that had sprouted up only moments ago.. A strong gust of wind soon follows, gathering the fallen bushels together until they form several small gleaming balls of light that then burst forth into the night sky, flying up until they reached the very heavens above, before suddenly shooting out across the lands, far off into the distance covering miles upon miles of open horizon, until you could witness them no longer.
“For the rest of this year, harvests shall preserve better and yield even more crop, food will be easy to find in the darkest nights, and every seed that is sown on this day will, in time, come to flourish. “
A brief pause as they glance down, presumably taking in the shocked look on a few faces around the crowd.
“You did not think I was worshiped for nothing, did you?” the slightest hint of a sly grin in their voice…
Vell takes another gentle bow as they address the crowd one final time, “Thank you all, and may you have plentiful harvests for an eternity to come.” The demi-god’s voice begins to fade away, growing more distant with every word, and you begin to realize that what remains of the field of wheat seems to again be growing taller and taller still, until it has enveloped the whole of your vision. Momentarily you feel lost in the waving sea of golden grain, but then, almost as quickly as you were engulfed, you manage to stumble out into the open once more.
Turning about, the wheat is gone and all around you seems familiar. The forest clearing that you were in only moments ago, now has vanished, replaced by the recognizable signs of home. None of the grems or people from the party seem to have appeared alongside you, and you can only assume that they too have been transported back to their usual regions. The moons overhead have returned to their original sizes, and you would have just as easily passed the whole thing off as a dream… were it not for a few kernels of grain that still clung tightly to your fur.
